Over the course of the summer, people of all faiths, cultures, and generations participated in hundreds of climate actions together on all seven continents leading up to the massive March to End Fossil Fuels in New York City on September 17th. There were 700 #EndFossilFuels actions in 65 countries, on all seven continents, with at least 600,000 participating! In New York City, Muslims joined together with many other faith communities as part of the Faith hub and marched together with peoples from all sectors of society, with 50,000-75,000 people attending!
Imam Saffet Catovic, a board member of MANA and Director of the United Nations Operations of Justice For All (www.justiceforall.org), who led the Muslim part of the Interfaith prayer service at the start of the March, observed, “Together, we brought our demands to #EndFossilFuels to the front page of the New York Times and dozens of other major media outlets around the world. Human caused climate change and fossil fuel–generated air pollution have disproportionately harmed people of color and low-income and EJ communities, causing harm to health and perpetuating the racially inequitable impacts of the fossil fuel economy. And this Zulm – Injustice/oppression needs to be stopped NOW!”
